FAQ
What day should I take my Casper Test?
We recommend applicants to one or more of the pilot programs reserve and complete their Casper test as soon as possible. Altus Assessments has made October 20th at 8:00 PM EST available to complete Casper prior to ERAS opening for programs. If you are able to sit Casper then, we recommend you do so.
Other dates include October 25 at 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM EST and October 29 at 8:00 PM EST (for select programs).
What are the benefits of taking Casper Suite for an applicant?
The 3 components of Casper Suite for GME will provide you with the opportunity to showcase your strengths with respect to professionalism and other non-cognitive attributes, and to demonstrate your personal attributes to the programs you are applying to, especially during this time where face to face communication is difficult. Overall, it will help you stand out from your peers all while complementing your ERAS applications.
Is Casper Suite for GME evidence-based?
Yes, all three components of the Casper Suite have been developed, or are being developed, using best-practices identified from the literature reviews and/or have undergone extensive research.
- Casper Test was developed at McMaster University’s Micheal G. DeGroote School of Medicine and has over 14 years of research behind it. It has been used to screen for personal and professional characteristics in undergraduate medicine across the US and Canada for 5 years and 10 years, respectively. Additionally, Casper Test has been used in Canadian PGME programs for the past 3 years. Casper Test has an average internal-consistency reliability of 0.85, an average inter-rater reliability of 0.86, and has shown promising predictive validity results for Canadian licensure examination scores and in-program clinical performance. The Casper Test taken at the UME level differs only in the level of difficulty and the context in which the scenarios are presented from the Casper Test being piloted at the GME level.
- Snapshot was developed out of a clear need that arose from admissions teams across GME pre-COVID and in UME during COVID. Admissions and selection committees had no good way of getting a sense of their applicants’ verbal and non-verbal communication skills prior to bringing them into to interview. In GME, interviews were very expensive for applicants to travel to (pre-COVID), so Snapshot was developed to provide exactly that, a ‘snapshot’ into verbal and non-verbal communication skills and motivation prior to an interview, saving time and resources for both programs and applicants. In UME, COVID made interviews difficult or impossible for many programs, so Snapshot introduced a way for programs to still get a glimpse of their applicants when interviews were not feasible. Snapshot questions were developed by advisory programs, and programs are provided with basic scoring guidelines and implicit bias training to help them evaluate the Snapshot videos. We are piloting Snapshot in UME and now GME to gain feedback from users like yourselves and the programs Snapshot was developed for, with the goal of collecting validity evidence to refine the assessment.
- Duet was developed using a consensus-building research methodology called a Delphi. A Delphi takes into account several stakeholder inputs to assemble factors relevant to the categories or themes Duet is looking to focus on. Stakeholders included program directors and coordinators, current residents, and medical students. The assessment format and scoring plan were developed according to best practices for pairwise assessment methods. Duet will be studied extensively through this pilot to determine the feasibility and validity of aligning an applicant’s values and priorities in a residency program to that of the characteristics the program offers. Feedback collected during this pilot will be used to refine Duet for subsequent years including its length and factors identified.
How will the Casper Suite for GME components be used by my prospective programs?
The GME programs participating in the Casper Suite pilot this admissions cycle will study all aspects of their participation in the pilot including, but not limited to, the delivery of all 3 components, program and applicant experience, selection process value-attainment, and decision-making analysis. Each program may use all 3 components of the Casper Suite for GME to make selection decisions prior to the invitation to interview, and/or post-interview, and/or prior to rank list selection.
Will programs use my score pre-interview selection or post-interview selection?
Each participating program will decide how and when to incorporate the Casper Suite into their selection process depending on their selection timelines. They may use it to determine who to invite to interview, to determine who to rank, or use it retrospectively for research purposes. The decision of when to incorporate the results of Casper Suite will be analyzed through this pilot.
What will happen if I do not complete all 3 components of the Casper Suite?
We highly recommend you complete all 3 components of Casper Suite for GME in order to submit a comprehensive supplement to your application. Programs participating in this pilot will be asking their applicants to complete Casper Suite for GME by Nov. 1, 2020.
What does it mean to be a “pilot”?
In higher education and training, it is very common to introduce a new assessment, course, program, or curriculum through what is called a pilot project. A pilot project is an initial small-scale implementation that is used to prove the viability of a new tool or set of tools. It is oftentimes a low-risk method to collect data in order to determine whether or not a tool is appropriate to fully roll out.
In the case of Casper Suite for GME, graduate medical education programs would like to pilot this set of admissions tools to help aid them in the selection process. Given larger numbers of applicants, application inflation, tight resources, and lack of objective data on non-cognitive skills, these programs have set out to study the viability of Casper Suite for GME for their selection process.
If I took the Casper Test to apply to the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University Cardiovascular Fellowship program, do I need to complete all 3 components?
No, you do not. East Carolina University Cardiovascular Fellowship is not participating in the Casper Suite for GME pilot this year.
Is there a cost to completing Casper Suite for GME?
No, there is no cost to applicants to complete these assessments this admissions cycle.

With JSS you can execute four commands to help you manage the security of managed computers: Lock Computer, Remove MDM Profile, Wipe Computer, or Send Blank Push.
Lock
If a computer that does not contain sensitive data becomes misplaced or stolen, you may elect to simply 'Lock' the computer, which renders the computer unusable to a would-be thief or someone who may encounter the computer during their travels. This command will execute the next time the computer shows up on a network with internet access. If the computer is recovered, you can simply 'Unlock' the computer with a passcode that you define.
Remove MDM Profile
If a computer no longer needs to be managed for whatever reason, you can choose to send an 'Unenroll' command. This command breaks the relationship between the JSS server and the computer you wish to unenroll; it will execute the next time the computer is on network with internet access. Users of that computer will no longer be able to access Self-Service software, and Admins will no longer be able to assign policies or other management tasks to the computer.

Wipe
If a computer contains sensitive data and becomes misplaced or stolen (or you're unsure if it holds sensitive data), you may elect to send a 'Wipe' command to the computer. This command wipes the contents of the computers hard drive rendering it un-usable; it executes the next time the computers shows up on a network with internet access. If the computer is recovered later it will need to be unlocked and re-imaged.
Casper Mac Management
Send Blank Push
Sends a blank push notification, prompting the computer to check in with Apple Push Notification service (APNs).
- None of these four commands remove the computer from the JSS inventory.
- The 'Wipe' and 'Lock' commands require that the machine has an OS X Recovery Partition. The OS X Recovery Partition is on all new Macs by default, and is created on older Macs when OS X 10.7+ is installed for the first time.
- Log into your JSS site at https://jssmgt.it.cornell.edu/<JSSInstance>
replacing <JSSInstance> with your instance's name.
For example, https://jssmgt.it.cornell.edu/limnology - Click .
- If desired, enter a search string, then click .
- Find the computer you wish to run the remote command against.
- Click the name of the computer.
- Click the Management tab.
- Click the icon for the desired command.
Casper Suite
Lock and Wipe will ask you to create a passcode, which you can use when the computer is recovered.
The next time the computer contacts the JSS, the command you specified will execute.
You can check the status of these remote commands on the computer's Details page, on the History panel. The Pending Commands tab allows you to cancel a remote command that has not yet run.
